Hi! My name is Carla, a 21-year-old child of God, studying law and living in a little village in Northern Ireland. I was born with a genetic condition called, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). EDS is a complex disorder which is described by Ehlers-Danlos Support UK as the following;
“EDS is a collection of inherited conditions that fit into a larger group known as heritable disorders of connective tissue. Connective tissues provide support in skin, tendons, ligaments and bones. There are different types of EDS, but they have features in common. These can include joint hyper-mobility, stretchy skin and tissue fragility. The fragile skin and unstable joints often found in EDS are the result of faulty collagen. Collagen is a protein in connective tissue which acts as a ‘glue’ in the body, adding strength and elasticity.” (Ehlers-Danlos Support UK 2013)
I have a very severe case of Ehlers-Danlos III, this causes a lot of joint dislocations, such as, my knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, thumbs and jaw. My hips and other joints are also very loose and fragile. I have chronic pain in most of my joints, muscle weakness, fainting, seizures and bone dysplasia which basically means that a lot of my bones are the wrong shape. The disorder also means that I have a lot of fatigue since it takes a lot more energy for me to do simple tasks and causes reflux and sickness due to weakened valves in my stomach. EDS also affects my balance and co-ordination. I can walk short distances but also require a wheelchair and other mobility aids. To date I have went through 11 surgeries in an attempt to lessen the number of dislocations, however many of these have failed.
Ehlers-Danlos is a wide and complex disorder and new symptoms can occur each day, it can sometimes be very difficult to explain and so I apologise in advance for any confusion. This blog is a record of my journey and my life with my Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. In medical terms I have an incurable condition, but with God all things are possible and there is every possibility that through Him I could be healed.
Therefore as I battle on through this life, which at times is extremely testing and difficult, I will not be overcome for God will not let me be consumed, He is in complete control and therefore I will praise Him.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in our afflictions…For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself…but that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, 8-10.
